Adding Wellness to My Everyday Work Life

We spend a majority of our waking hours working, so I thought I would share how I add wellness to my everyday work life.

Whether it be you wake up and go to an office every day or if you’re like me and work from home, the place you go to work is where we spend a majority of our hours in any given day, in any given week, in any given month. I truly believe that if there’s any place where you should try and achieve a sense of wellness it should be taking place in the areas where you are spending the majority of your time. For me, it’s my home office or my bedroom.

A typical day is working anywhere from 7 to 10 hours and sleeping a good solid 8 hours a night, therefore that’s where a majority of my living takes place. Sure we’d all like that ratio to look a little different but for a majority of us, that’s where I’m guessing your time is being spent as well. For me, I absolutely love what I do so I don’t dislike my work life, therefore I want to bring wellness into it whichever way possible. Over the years I’ve learned a few ways you can add wellness into your work life and I thought I’d share the ways I do that here.

Create an environment that is calm, beautiful and inspiring. If you’re going to spend a large chunk of your waking hours in this area, then create an ambience that doesn’t stress you out, but rather invites you to stay relaxed and inspires you to create your best work.

Add greenery. This is something that I have been really focused on incorporating throughout my home office and the rest of my home quite frankly. Greenery can do wonders for your overall spirit and mindset! Did you know that plants can even detox the air?!?

Take scheduled breaks to get outdoors. I cannot stress the importance enough of standing up, getting away from your desk and going for a light walk in the morning, at lunchtime or right after work. It does wonders for energizing your mind and gives your body (and eyes) a much-needed break from staring at technology all day. 

Incorporate mood-enhancing aromatherapy into your workspace.  I absolutely swear by the effectiveness of utilizing pure essential oils in your life. By utilizing aromatherapy through a diffuser, you’re able to select the right combinations and strengths of essential oils to create beautiful, personalized fragrances that are designed to promote wellness, happiness, alertness, relaxation, and so on.

The great thing with diffusers today is that you can incorporate them right into your existing home decor. The more you welcome them into your everyday life, the more likely you are to utilize them on a daily basis. That’s when the real wellness benefits kick in. When I was making some changes to my home office recently,  I really focused on designing my open shelves with intention towards things that bring me happiness, inspiration or wellness into my life. This beautiful essential oil diffuser from Chesapeake Bay Candle with its natural woodgrain base and frosted dome glass was such a natural fit to incorporate into the space.  It’s really to easy to use in terms of filling up with water on a daily basis and then adding whichever combination of essential oils you want to use that day. I’m the first to tell you that not all essential oils are created equal, but I love that Chesapeake Bay Candle oils are 100% pure essentials oils that are available in either singles (1 aroma material) or signature blends, each containing 2 or more pure aroma materials. My favorites are Happiness (blend of ylang-ylang, lavender & petitgrain), Awake (blend of orange, ginger & tangerine), Uplift (sweet orange) and Asleep (lavender).

In terms of adding wellness to my everyday work life, I often diffuse either Uplift by itself as it’s good for obviously uplifting your spirit, but it’s also cleansing and energizing. I also really enjoy the signature blends throughout the work day, so sometimes it just depends on what fragrance I want. Happiness blend is great for relaxing, stress relief and comforting (i.e. great for Monday’s) and the Awake blend has benefits of energizing, refreshing and renewing (i.e. after 2:00 pm). I typically keep the Asleep upstairs and start diffusing it about an hour before bedtime as the pure lavender essential oil is great for relaxing, stress relief and calming. Basically, it’s the key to a great night sleep!

I find that when I really focus on adding wellness into my everyday work life, I’m far more productive, energized and less stressed throughout the day. It takes little steps of wellness each and every day to make them a habit, but the rewards are tenfold.
