I’m taking a trip of a lifetime to Italy for 18 days and in order to pack smart and efficient, I created a capsule wardrobe where items can be used multiple ways throughout the vacation.
I have basically been packing for this trip since February (that’s 4.5 months in advance) and am finally ready to start putting it all in a suitcase and eager to get on this plane! Italy has been a trip that I’ve always dreamed of going on and I could not be more excited to visit my grandfather’s homeland and just experience the culture to the absolute fullest. There are four of us going, my parents, Sean and myself and we are renting a Fiat 500X to accommodate all off us PLUS our luggage. Needless to say, it’s going to be tight. Thus, we limited each of us to a 25-26″ piece of luggage and that meant packing strategically.
Ultimately, to keep things easier on me I decided to build a capsule wardrobe that would consist of a common color scheme and pieces that could be multi-functional, multi-wearable. I ended up sticking to a black, white and navy color scheme which is kind of funny considering that I rarely wear that combination together now. Ever since I started getting items that would work in my capsule wardrobe, I realized I actually do like the classic color combination and well…. everything does go with it. I’m typically a bit more conservative in my style, but I wanted to remain tasteful and be able to interchange clothes easier.
To put it in a nutshell, 3/4th of my clothing is from the Splendid outlet or from LOFT. It’s going to be quite warm while we are in Italy so I wanted clothing that was lightweight, breathable and just easy to wear. I’ll have to bring my little steamer along with because although Splendid has the best fabric ever, it does wrinkle easy.

My day-of, airplane style 99% of the time consists of wearing my Lululemon leggings with a comfortable tank top and a denim jacket tied around my waist. I’m always wearing my black Nike sneakers because comfort is my top priority but they still allow me to look pulled together. Thrown over my shoulder is my beloved striped Stella & Dot tote that holds everything I need in a carry-on. (I’ll be sharing a post soon on how I pack an organized inflight essentials bag)
As for shoes, I’m going to really try and keep it to a minimum. I was able to find these Sam Edelman gladiator sandals that are super comfortable so I purchased them in both ivory and black. These will be my staple shoe throughout most of the trip. I’m also packing my Teva Cabrillo wedges in both tan and black because they can dress up an outfit if needed and are ridiculous comfortable! Since we will be doing a TON of walking, I’m bringing along my tried & true black Nike’s. These were a savior in DC and in NYC so they’re going to have to hold up in Italy as well. My other shoe will be my favorite Cole Haan loafers that are super comfortable and will dress up an outfit if needed.
As for accessories, I will be carrying around my Lo & Sons camera bag that provides both functionality and has great street style. I’ll also be using the striped black tote bag from Stella & Dot as both my carry-on and throughout the trip when I need to carry extra essentials. The best part, I got the matching slim clutch that fits right inside the front pocket to be used as a wallet or can be used on it’s own when we got out for dinner. Genius!!
As for jewelry, I’m sticking with pieces that can be worn multiple times and aren’t too “heavy” in appearance. My latest favorites are of course from Stella & Dot because I love basically everything they are doing. These items will definitely be making the trip with me (here, here, here, and here). Without a doubt, one of the best purchases I’ve ever made was this travel jewelry organizer made by Kendra Scott. It holds absolutely everything I’d need to bring and it stays slim so it can easily tuck into my carry-on luggage without taking up much room.
I think I’m ready to get on the jet plane and head off to Italy! I’m confident with my capsule wardrobe selection and that everything can be worn together multiple ways to really stay efficient and not overpack. I’ll be sure to let you know how it works out once I return!
