To put it simply, Bourbon whiskey has become a staple in our household. Between making simple classics such as whiskey and ginger ale to my favorite, the Amaretto Driver … it’s versatility has made me quite the fan as of lately.
Since bourbon has a pretty substantial variance in pricing, I wanted to try a bottle that wouldn’t break the bank but still provide nice quality. We were at Trader Joe’s the other day where I was planning on picking up a bottle of Bulleit Bourbon (psst….it’s cheaper here than at liquor or grocery stores) and noticed that they bottled their own Bourbon for only $14.99! I figured there wasn’t much to lose in trying it out and gave it a test run in these deliciously, refreshing Mint Julep cocktails.
I was given the Vintage Cocktails and Craft Cocktails books for Christmas and have loved testing out their concoctions. They display their recipes and images in such a fun, unique way that really makes them in original. I suggest adding these to your collection!
Mint Julep Cocktail Recipe: (recipe per Vintage Cocktails)
• 2 oz Bourbon
• 1/2 oz Simple Syrup or a Level Teaspoon of Sugar
• 2 Sprigs of Mint
• Crushed Ice
Gently muddle the sprig of mint in the bottom of your glass with sugar or simple syrup. (we used just sugar)
Add half of the Bourbon and fill with crushed ice.
Swirl with a bar spoon until the outside of the glass frosts.
Add more crushed ice and the remaining Bourbon; stir again to frost the glass.
Garnish with mint sprig.
