We have been loving all the uses for mason jars and wanted to join in on the fun. So we did a little DIY project to test out our skills and creativity.
We always have mason jars on hand and all kinds of paints. However, I really wanted a certain color and sheen to the jars. These Martha Stewart Craft Paints from Michael’s Crafts fit the bill.
We decided to try painting the outside of the jar first like you would with the chalk paint. As we did this we realized this was not going to work. You can see all the brush strokes and unevenness of the paint. So that was a fail and we laughed it off and started over!
When you want to use a paint that is pearl or has sparkle in it you have to pour the paint inside the jar. You also want to have a paint that has a little more fluidity so it runs nicely. It will still work if it’s not but it takes time and lots of patience!
Start with a medium amount of paint inside the bottom of the jar and slowly roll it from side to side while it’s upside down. As you go you will notice that you may need to add more paint and you can do this to an area that needs it and continue rolling the jar sided to side working the paint to the top!
Once all of the jar is covered inside with paint you will want to put the jar upside down on a paper towel (multiple layers!) while all the excess paint slowly drips off. I find that depending on how thick your paint is, this may take up to 24 hours to do.
Once there is no more paint dripping out you will turn it right side up and then let it sit up for another 24 – 48 hours so that it is completely dry. You may want to spray a clear sealant on the inside to help the paint last longer. In an upcoming post, I’ll share with you how I plan to display my makeup brushes in these pretty jars!
Keep an eye out for a few more ways I plan on using these easy DIY painted mason jars this holiday season!
