I was on the hunt for something that could work as a bench at the foot of our bed in the master bedroom. I wasn’t willing to spend a ton, but loved the idea of building something original. With the help from my Dad, we ended up buying an old toboggan from the flea market and turned it into the perfect, foot-of-the-bed bench!
Those of you that know me personally, you know that I can be a bit of a wild child and it doesn’t stop short of picking out a toboggan and telling my Dad that this could be the perfect bench! He definitely gave me a look like I was crazy but once we got to brainstorming how this could work, he was on board!
With a few days work, we had exactly what I was hoping for, a gorgeous toboggan bench for the foot of the bed!
Our initial plan was to go for an industrial look using pipe fittings, but I was shocked at how expensive those are! So… we had this console table at home with a minor leg fracture that would work perfect once the legs got hacked off a few inches. Let’s get to work!
Our first step was to apply wood cleaner, then Danish Oil in teak. It really made the wood stand out & gave it a distressed, vintage look.
Next up, we screwed the top of the console table to the toboggan. This definitely helped secure the structure of the bench so we would be able to sit on it.
Legs are attached, but the table is about 6 inches too tall. We took off the legs (attached by simple bolts) and ran over to The Home Depot where they cut them down for us at no charge!
Now it’s at the right height of 22″ tall.
We let the oil dry on the toboggan for another day in the garage and then brought it up to the bedroom where it fit PERFECTLY! I am beyond ecstatic with the final result and love that it is a one of a kind piece. This entire DIY project cost me less than $50.
