Traveling with our pets and seeking new adventures is one of life’s greatest joys. Keep these road trip essentials along for the ride to ensure a safe, comfortable journey is up ahead.
Exploring new destinations is one of my favorite hobbies and I love to bring Dexie along for the ride. She’s my constant companion and provides an extra set of fun watching her venture down new paths, explore different smells and simply be there to hang with me. Whether it be a camping trip on the cliffs of Big Sur or a long weekend up in Carmel, there is one thing that’s for certain, this dog is always up for the journey ahead (as long as it’s with me!)
To make traveling with a dog easier, there are a few road trip essentials that’ll save you on clean up, packing, safety and more! There is no question that I love my dog with all my heart, but that doesn’t mean I have to love her constant shedding. I’ve grown up with Golden Retrievers my entire life, so there is a good part of me that’s just used to dog hair being everywhere. The one place I can’t stand it is in the back of my car. Whatever style of “carpet” they use back there, it allows the dog hair to weave itself in and it’s virtually impossible to vacuum out. After all these years of just dealing with it, I finally got my hands on a pet cargo cape that prevents dog hair from ending up everywhere, but also has some pretty sweet functionality as well.
I’m literally so in love with this cargo cape & I can finally keep my car sensibly clean. It fits over the backseat headrests and has strategic placement of velcro to lock into place to prevent it from sliding around. It’s also waterproof, comes with a foldable bumper guard and has two mesh pockets on the side that are perfect for storing leashes, poo bags, medical kits, etc. Another great feature is that it has a zipper on the section that lays against the seats so that if you need to lay down one side or both sides, it can accommodate that as well while staying in place. Yep, it’s a lifesaver!
I just throw in her bed on top of the cargo cape and Dex just snuggles right up and waits for the adventure to arrive!
Speaking of medical kits, I’m a terrible dog mom and cannot believe I’ve never had one prepared in case of emergencies with my beloved dogs. Thankfully, Kurgo makes a pet first aid kit that is easy to transport (if fits right in the pocket of the cargo cape), but comes stocked full of the all the first aid essentials in case you ever need it.
Funny side story — the other day, while in the kitchen, I sliced my finger open with a knife. It was a pretty good cut & definitely required some medical essentials to stop the bleeding and prevent infection. Well, we also don’t have a first aid kit for the humans in our house so we resorted to opening up Dexie’s medical kit to grab out a few essentials. So as the saying goes, “you really never know when you might need it!”
Our dogs have to eat right? In the past, I’ve either gone to the pet store and purchased the smaller size food bag for Dexie or I have taken the time to portion out daily meals in individual baggies just so I wasn’t wasting crucial cargo space on road trips. Gone are those days and in are the days of transporting up to 5 pounds of food in this kibble carrier! I’m telling you, this bag is full of tricks. For carrying the kibble, simply fill it up, roll the top down and bring each of the buckles up to the top and clip together. Now you’ve got an easy to carry handle and you could easily slip in a scoop if needed. This bag also has a side zipper for extra treats and a pouch at the bottom for a collapsible dish! Genius right? Well I think so.
Lots of our adventures take place outdoors and there are never enough precautions to ensure the safety of you and your pet while hiking a trail, walking new paths at night or sitting around your campsite. Slip on this reflective pet bandana to ensure you’ve always got an eye on the whereabouts of your pup and it helps others see her too. Win-Win!
The bandana is a lightweight ripstop fabric that’s ready for an active day ahead and then a hidden light strip is strategically placed where you can quickly turn them on to be a steady light or blinking lights. No reason to not head out for the night run now huh?
Dexie is all smiles and ready for our next adventure together! I’m think a camping trip should be in the near future, what do you think?
Thank you to Kurgo for sponsoring this post. Dexie LOVES all her new travel goodies and cannot wait for her next adventure!
