French Toast with a Twist

12.08.14

I have a love/hate relationship with the kitchen. I love good food and I hate anything to do with making it. The thing is, when I actually take the time to cook or bake, I’m pretty decent at it. Whether it be the prep work, the ridiculous amount of dirty dishes accumulated or just plain lazy… it’s not my favorite thing to do.

But let’s get back to when I do cook, I can actually whip up something pretty tasty. Since I love breakfast food, I really wanted to make a french toast dish that had a little twist to the typical recipe. I added one extra step before the french toast hit the pan and that was to coat it in crushed Kettle Brand Maple Bacon chips. The result was phenomenal!

yields 2 servings

Ingredients:
4 slices of French Toast bread (extra thick slices of bread)
3 eggs
3/4 cup Milk
2 tsp Cinnamon (divided)
1 bag Kettle Brand Maple Bacon Chips
100% Pure Maple Syrup
Butter & Powdered Sugar (for garnishment)

Directions:

In shallow baking dish, combine eggs, milk and 1 tsp of cinnamon. Whisk until combined.

In separate baking dish, crush half the bag of chips until coarsely broken.

Place skillet on medium heat and spray with butter to prevent sticking.

To prepare french toast — dredge one slice of bread in egg mixture making sure to dip both sides. Remove and immediately place into the crushed chips. Each side should be fairly coated. Carefully place slice of bread onto hot skillet.

Cook 1-2 minutes on each side or until bread is no longer soggy.

Slice in half and serve on plate with a dollop of butter and a sprinkle of powdered sugar.

Drizzle warm 100% pure maple syrup and enjoy!

I’m lucky enough to have my Uncle’s pure maple syrup that he harvests on his land in northern Wisconsin. It makes all the difference between using the real stuff versus “pancake syrup.” The richness of the maple syrup is evident on the very first bite!
