Skip store bought versions and enjoy a healthy traditional hummus recipe made right in your Vitamix in just minutes.
Time for an admission of guilt. I have an addiction to plain, traditional hummus. Not just any old traditional recipe, but particularly the one from Trader Joe’s and the individual Sabra containers from Costco. I never seem to have enough of it in my fridge and often finding myself cursing out the cucumber I just sliced because there is no hummus to eat it with. I mean, it’s not the cucumbers fault, it’s just simply the fact that I eat hummus in mass quantities throughout the week.
For lunches some days I will make a plate of sliced cucumbers and baby carrots and eat it with hummus. If I didn’t eat it for lunch, then my go-to healthy snack is cucumbers, carrots and hummus. Needless to say, a routine shopping trip to the market for these three staple items is a common occurrence about every 3 days.
Since I’m enjoying spending more time in the kitchen learning how to convert my favorite grocery items into recipes I can make at home, it was only a matter of time before I busted out my trusty Vitamix and got to making my own healthy, traditional hummus. The best part of making your own recipes is that you can control every ingredient that goes in. Out goes ingredients that are used to make it last longer on the shelf and in comes ingredients that we can actually pronounce and are good for us.
Although most hummus containers bought at the store aren’t filled with too many unnecessary ingredients, it’s the mere fact that I was able to whip up a batch of fresh hummus in under 10 minutes that tastes even more delicious than the versions I was buying. Just stock up your pantry with a few of the essential ingredients (garbanzo beans, cumin and sesame seeds) from places like Thrive Market that’ll ship them right to your front door and you’ll be good to go. Gone are the days of cursing out the cucumber.

- 1 15oz can of garbanzo beans (with liquid)
- 1/4 cup roasted sesame seeds
- 1/3 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
- 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- 1 tsp minced garlic
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- himalayan sea salt, to taste
Instructions
- Combine the garbanzo beans, sesame seeds, lemon juice, olive oil, garlic and cumin in the Vitamix and blend on high for 1 minute. Scrape sides of container and blend again for 15 seconds.
- Scoop hummus mixture into a bowl and add salt to taste.
Notes
This recipe calls for roasted sesame seeds, substitute with raw sesame seeds if desired.

I prefer plain hummus, but feel free to play around with the recipe by adding a little spice, roasted red peppers, extra garlic, etc. Enjoy!
