3 months into our new home and I’m slowly coming around to showing you some of the projects we’ve done to make it uniquely ours. Over the coming months, I hope to show you more and more of our house tour as everything starts to fall into place. We’re definitely taking our time decorating this place as we don’t plan on going anywhere anytime soon!
Here’s what we do know — we’ve nicknamed the house “10 shades of grey” and are inspired by industrial and wood aesthetics. Think Restoration Hardware”esquie” with plenty of DIY projects to stay within budget.
Speaking of Restoration Hardware, I’m lucky enough to have an outlet store just 10 minutes down the road. Over the summer, as our house was going from stilts to having walls and ultimately being completed… I popped over to the store on a pretty routine basis to check for any amazing deals. One of the steals I found was this gorgeous floating industrial shelving unit from their baby line.
Unfortunately, looks can be deceiving and it wasn’t quite so easy to get this bad boy hung on the wall. Thankfully, with the help of my Dad, we planned it pretty thoroughly so that it would be drilled into a stud and sturdy for years to come. Here’s how we did it —
Since attaching it straight to the wall wasn’t an option because of the stud placements, we had to get creative by painting a 1×6 pine board the same color as the wall and screwing the metal piping directly to the board.
Then it was all about measuring, and measuring some more. Where were the studs versus the industrial pipe bases, etc etc. Wish I could say it was cookie cutter, but it took quite a bit of planning to get this right as the shelving unit is quite heavy and we simply couldn’t screw this up.
Once we had it right, we drilled the board with the shelving attached directly to the wall in multiple places with lag bolts. We weren’t compromising on stability.
I had the tough task of overseeing the project and making sure everything was aligned!
Once hung, it was time to sit back and enjoy the fruit of our (or their) labor! That and brainstorm what I was going to decorate the shelving with.
The end results were well worth the difficulties of hanging it! It turned out to be the perfect place to display my vintage cameras, flea market finds and go-to cocktail books.
Hope you like the end results as much as we do!
