Inspired to keep my creativity flowing, I signed up to learn brush lettering with Brown & Co Designs at her workshop held earlier this week at Madewest Brewery in Ventura.
Here’s the thing, I’ve always had a thing for handwriting. Since the 3rd grade I’ve been getting complimented on my penmanship and still do today. Thus, when this calligraphy and brush lettering craze really took off I thought I could easily jump on board and it would come naturally. WRONG! There is definitely an art and a skill to it that requires lots of practice. Thankfully, Heather from Brown & Co Designs had a seat open up in her Ventura workshop held at Madewest Brewery and I jumped at the opportunity to learn firsthand from someone who knows what they’re doing!
For the cost of the class, which is $65, you receive personalized instructions from Heather herself plus everything you could need to get started brush lettering. She included a folder that contained practice sheets & tracing paper as well as providing 5 different markers that were ours to take home, a complimentary beer, cupcakes and snacks and a few giveaways throughout the night. It’s well worth the value!
I see why Heather titled the class, “Brush Lettering Basics,” because you really do have to start with the basics of learning how to write each letter of the alphabet into how to connect the letters and eventually all the way into forming full words & artistic prints. I realized I have a heavy hand so the downstroke isn’t a problem for me, but having to be light with my hand on the upstroke to create a thin line is something I’m going to have work at. I wasn’t too bad and I hope to share a sneak at my work in the next few weeks after I practice some more.
What’s great about attending these sorts of classes on a whim or simply because it’s something you want to do for “me” time is you end up meeting some really great people. I sat at a table with Heather, Katie & Rhyan who were a ton of fun and we had quite a few laughs together over silly things like writing the letter “o.”
By the end of the class I was hooked. I really want to continue practicing my brush lettering and let this kind of be my creative outlet. I’ve already been scouring Amazon for my supplies(watch out for me when I get a new hobby)!
Keep an eye out in the next few days on Instagram for a possible giveaway happening (*wink wink*) between myself and Heather from Brown & Co Designs. There’s nothing better than getting to team up with local, talented creatives who want to give back to my amazing readers! This is what building a community is all about.
