Let’s be honest, there are just some mornings when the gears are moving just a little bit slower and you could use a little extra pick me up to get things going! What is great about this Morning Pick Me Up Espresso Smoothie is that it’s conquering two birds with one stone. For the 90% of you that drink coffee in the morning, we’re accomplishing that with 1-2 shots of espresso plus knocking out making an extra breakfast because the smoothie is packed full of protein and will keep you feeling full.

What’s not to love about that?

I for one am NOT a big caffeine drinker. Actually, I rarely drink it unless it’s in a little bit of ice tea that I consume every now and then. To be honest, I just don’t need it and don’t really like how I feel when I’m all revved up. That isn’t to say that when I’m feeling a bit sluggish that I won’t drink one of these smoothies, but I have to stick with just 1 shot of espresso and follow it up with a ton of water to keep myself from going bonkers. Now for Sean who drinks coffee each morning on his way to work, this is a great substitute some mornings because he gets an extra dose of caffeine (he uses 2 shots) plus the added benefits of a chocolate protein smoothie.

We use our Nespresso VertuoLine to make the espresso and then blend everything together in our trusty Vitamix. It’s a quick process and believe me, you’ll be feeling plenty energized and not wasting time sipping 3-5 cups of coffee! The key ingredient to the smoothie, beyond the espresso, is the chocolate protein powder. I love using Tone It Up’s version because it’s organic, non-GMO, gluten free, dairy free, vegan, etc. It’s not full of unwanted fillers and it really does keep you feeling full for hours on end.

  1. In a blender, add the protein powder, banana, almond milk and espresso.
  2. Blend on high and add ice cubes if necessary to thicken it up.
  3. Pour into glass and garnish with cacao nibs.
