I’m sure many of you added some sort of organizing task to your resolutions list for 2014, or maybe you’re just looking for fresh ideas on how to make the most out of your closet space. I’m constantly tweaking my organizing methods and spent some time this weekend touching up our master closet space.
Here are some tips that I have found to work for me:
Tip #1
Organize your clothing based on category and then color. Pictured here are my dresses, tanks, and jeans.
Tip #2
Fold your jeans (not dress pants!) if you don’t have extra hanging space AND take the time to fold them nicely. I’m a stickler on the folding part.
Tip #3
Save space and the quality of your sweaters by folding them nicely in stacks. Hanging some sweaters can actually damage them unless you have the proper shoulder inserts.
Also, the wider the fold the flatter they will be on the shelf. This helps prevent the stack from toppling over.
Tip #4
Use decorative bins when dresser space isn’t available. I use mine for all my personal undergarments.
These bins are from The Container Store and the chalkboard labels are from Staples.
Tip #5
Use pretty things as additional storage. The top bin is for my wallets, the Louboutin box is all my shoe accessories (i.e. foot petals, arch supports, etc) and the pink striped box is belts.
Tip #6
Cubes work great for using available height space in your closet. I grabbed these at Target for my handbag collection.
Tip #7
Display hats using hooks or pegs. I chose to hang mine with 3M hooks above the doorway.
Tip #7
Use clear shoe bins to allow you to easily see your fabulous shoe collection! The Container Store has both men & women sizes, but you can also find these at Target and Bed Bath & Beyond.
Tip #8
Label your shoe bins. Eliminate the hassle of digging for your favorite pair of nude heels.
Tip #9
Strategically use any available space underneath your hanging clothes. My boot collection can easily overtake a space, but lining them up under my dresses & tanks keeps them out of the way and easily accessible.
Tip #10
Display something personal or fun. After-all, it is your closet and you should enjoy going in there!
…. and YES, new shoes certainly do cure the blues!
I hope you enjoyed my 10 Tips for organizing your closet. If the mere idea of where to start organizing your closet overwhelms you, I suggest playing your favorite music, grabbing a glass of wine and start with the clothes. Step 1 should always be determining if the item should even stay in your closet in the first place! More on that in a future post….
Some day when I OWN my house, I’ll get those custom closets again. Until then, it’s about using inexpensive products to help get the job done. How do you think I did ??
Have fun & get organizing!
