How many of your linen closets are a black hole of miscellaneous goods surrounding a mish-mosh of your actual linens?
Here’s the good news … (a) you’re not the only one, and (b) it is possible to create an organized system that you can adhere to on a day-to-day basis. I’ve stuck to my current system for over a year now with just a few tweaks & little out of my pocket.
Sticking to rolling sheets (folding a fitted bed sheet is near impossible!), folding towels and placing items in their correct basket, bin or tote is key towards maintaining an organized linen closet.
The first step is taking EVERYTHING out of the closet & tossing whatever is old, expired or you simply don’t use. The second step is to measure your space so you know how much room you have when purchasing any bins or baskets.
I used tags and labels from Martha Stewart’s collection at Staples to mark the baskets & bins.
I keep a stash of decorative bins & gifts supplies on hand for anything last minute. I reuse all the tissue paper & boxes from my monthly Birchbox subscription. The craft paper boxes are used throughout my house to organize things, and here you see I’ve used one to contain our extra batteries.
These blue totes are from the dollar section at Target. They have so many options in this area that can be used towards creating an organized home. I’m serious … check it out !!
I used 6 totes to create an organized system for items that you want to quickly grab (i.e. sunscreen, cough syrup, contacts, shampoo, etc.)
Since we often shop at Costco and grab items in bulk, I found it essential to find a way to store those items in an organized way that would still be easy to access. I grabbed these colorful bins on clearance at Target & labeled them (1) Personal, (2) Health, (3) Bath and (4) Home.
On the bottom of our linen closet is a large basket for throw blankets and any duffel bags that we just grab & go. Having everything clearly labeled allows for my significant other to not have to “dig” for anything & put things back in there correct spot. If it’s complicated, they won’t do it!
It is a pretty simple, streamlined and cost-effective organizing solution for your linen closet. I helped install a very similar solution in my sister-in-laws house not too long ago. A positive outlook, good company and a glass of wine can do wonders towards creating an organized home!
Good luck & keep getting organized in 2014.
